KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT

Iron stains need a water-specific treatment plan

Staining deserves investigation, but appearance alone does not identify the cause. Water-test results and source conditions help determine whether softening, pretreatment or a different approach belongs in the plan.

Your water. Your household. A practical next step.

01

Limitations of Standard Softeners on Iron

A conventional cation-exchange softener primarily removes dissolved calcium and magnesium. Dissolved iron and other source conditions can interfere with resin performance and may require pretreatment.

Identify exact water issues before buying hardware. A softener alone should never be assumed to eliminate severe staining, odors, bacteria, or all iron forms.

02

Certified Laboratory Testing for Well Water

Fixture discoloration does not identify specific mineral forms or confirm drinking-water safety. Professional laboratory analysis defines your actual water profile.

  • Use state-certified laboratories rather than relying on in-home sales demonstrations.
  • Consult local health departments to select tests matching your specific well and concerns.
  • Test beyond mineral hardness to determine whether targeted pretreatment is necessary.
03

Match treatment to test results

Match treatment to a verified water concern and the exact product’s performance claim. Avoid prescribing a treatment sequence from staining alone.

  • Ask which laboratory results support the proposed treatment.
  • Discuss whether iron or other source conditions may interfere with softening.
  • Do not assume a sediment filter, carbon filter or softener resolves every stain or odor.
